Garmin Rino 130 Bilingual GPS and Two-Way Radio (24MB memory) Review

Garmin Rino 130 Bilingual GPS and Two-Way Radioavailable all over in the low to mid $200 range.
i have the 120 also. great for motorcycling with wife. between communication n decent gps
(neither great alone, one futzes with the optimal performance of the other, but not enough for me not to stay with the rino model come upgrade time) i think its a usefull product.

UNLESS i get around to getting a cell phone. my wifes has bluetooth w/cordless headset,as does my son.that makes the best person to per talking setup ive seen,,gps too!
only thing missing, and for motorcycling or backpacking is the "friend location finder" rite there on the rino screen.
say she is having a problem with the rite channel or whatever,,i can still "see her" on my screen and find her.
it happened once, and we hooked up in less than 20 minutes..we were on the highway, and she took a exit,by the time i turned around and got to her exit,i could find her down the road. we lost sight of each other, and she thought i was way up ahead of her,but i was just a bit in front, but hidden by a truck,i saw her turn off in my mirror, and ya ya ya,,found her in no time.

also great i think is at the fair for handing to one of the kids. then if they arent talking,,you can still find/see them.

they are a bit pricy though. i wonder why no one else hasnt tried to make a similar one??

Product Description:
The the most feature-rich device in the Rino family, Garmin's Rino 130 (bilingual edition) 2-way FRS/GMRS radio and GPS receiver comes fully loaded with an electronic compass, a barometric sensor, a weather receiver for 7 NOAA weather channels, and 24 MB of internal memory for downloading and storing MapSource detail--including data from products like U.S. Topo 24K, U.S. Topo, Recreational Lakes, BlueChart, and MetroGuide (MapSource products sold separately). The Rino 130 is also outfitted with a marine-point database and a basemap of North and South America. The database includes nautical navaids for North and South America. The Americas Highway basemap includes the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, and covers an area from W180 to W30 Longitude and S60 to N75 Latitude. Also included is a high-level worldwide map with political boundaries and major cities. Among many other included elements are oceans, rivers, and lakes (greater than 30 square miles), principal cities and many smaller cities and towns, major interstates and principal highways, and political boundaries (state and international borders). The Rino 130 also offers 10,000 tracklogs versus 2,048 with the Rino 120. The 130 also comes ready with amassive 24 MB of memory unlike the Rino 120 with 8MB. Lastly the 130 shines with the very useful electronic compass, altimeter, glide ratio, glide ratio to destination, and vertical speed to destination features that the Rino 120 lacks.
Integration has its advantages: the Rino 130 sends and receives GPS locations using FRS channels and shows them on the map. The GPS device is a 12-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver. WAAS, which stands for Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), is the global-positioning-system of choice for mariners. The handheld's built-in electronic compass give a heading while you're standing still, and its barometric altimeter provides accurate elevation and pressure readings to help you identify and analyze weather conditions.
The Rino 130 also provides two-way radio communication with a transmission range of up to two miles using FRS channels and up to five miles with GMRS (be aware that use of GMRS requires an FCC license). The integration of two-way radio and GPS lets you transmit your position with a simple button press, so others can easily navigate to your position. The Rino 130 also has a polling feature so you can manually request GPS location information from other Rino units.
You get 14 FRS channels, 8 GMRS channels, and 8 GMRS repeater channels, as well as 38 sub-audible squelch codes per transmission channel for semi-private radio communications.
The unit's ergonomic design grants single-handed operation, with its Call, Page mode, and Press-To-Talk (PTT) buttons mounted on the side, Power/Backlighting button on top, Volume and Zoom buttons on front, and a Thumb Stick positioned in the center. The thumb stick allows channel selection and volume adjustment in FRS/GMRS mode, as well as quick map panning, enter, and selection functions in GPS mode.
Other features include a backlit display (160 x 160 pixels), external voice activation (VOX), waterproof construction to IPX-7 standards (immersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes), storage for up to 500 waypoints with graphic identification and 20 reversible routes, 10,000 trackpoints and up to 20 saved tracks to retrace your path or a companion's path via the location-reporting feature, trip computer with speed tracking, sunrise/sunset read out, trip time, and trip distance, and multiple grid formats including MGRS and Loran TD. The Rino 130 even sends and receives short text notes for quiet communication.
The Rino 130 has a battery life of 14 hours (typical use) on 3 AA alkaline batteries (not included).

The WAAS difference

100 meters: Accuracy of the original GPS system, which was subject to accuracy degradation under the government-imposed Selective Availability (SA) program.
15 meters: Typical GPS position accuracy without SA.
3-5 meters: Typical differential GPS (DGPS) position accuracy.
Less than 3 meters: Typical WAAS position accuracy.
WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.
How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.
Who benefits from WAAS?
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does.

Icom IC-M602 Fixed-Mount Marine VHF Radio (Black) Review

Icom IC-M602 Fixed-Mount Marine VHF RadioThis is a great VHF Marine radio if it is the only one on your vessel. DSC feature works well, NMEA interface is easy to wire in. Audio from speaker is excellent. However, it has no RF shielding and interferes with another IC-M602 and every other piece of comm gear aboard so I can't rate it any higher. Great for a pleasure boat that will have this as their only radio. The remote handset feature is great. (This is an additional option you must buy.)

Product Description:
Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M602 flush-mount VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The top-of-the-line radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including a full large dot-matrix LCD display with a seven-step dimmer, an intuitive, easy-to-use front panel, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a hot fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching.
The radio's receiver is no slouch from a performance perspective, with excellent specifications of more than 80 dB for spurious response and intermodulation rejection. The result is a receiver that's powerful enough to catch a weak signal even between two strong signals, making it much less likely that you'll miss important transmissions. The front-facing speaker, meanwhile, offers a robust 5-watt audio output that comes through loud and clear even when the engine is roaring.
The IC-M602 offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on emergency channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch"modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged.
As with other high-quality fixed-mount VHF radios, the IC-M602 comes with built-in Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which lets you constantly monitor channel 70 or send a formatted distress message in an emergency. DSC activates an instantaneous, continuous "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel and time stamps the message. And when connected to a NMEA-enabled GPS receiver, your radio can easily send the position data of your boat or determine another vessel's location and then display it your LCD screen or the GPS itself. The polling function even checks whether a specific ship is in your communication range. In addition, all the DSC functions are accessible from the 10-key keypad.
And by adding a pair of optional CommandMic III microphones (sold separately), users can control all available functions of the IC-M602 from a remote location, such as from the deck or the fly bridge. Each CommandMic III--which includes a multifunction jog dial for quick and easy access to the settings--works from up to 70 feet away, and handles such functions as squelch adjustments, foghorn signals, channel selection, and more. The mics even double as intercoms, making onboard communication easier than ever.
Other details include a built-in 22-watt hailer for signaling other boats or the deck/marina staff; an integrated foghorn with four selectable patterns; instant access to channels 16 and 9; compatibility with the UT-112 voice scrambler (sold separately) for communication privacy; and a sleek black housing. The IC-M602, which mounts flush in your boat's dash, measures 8.66 by 4.34 by 4.31 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box
IC-M602 radio, hand microphone, mounting bracket kit, DC power cable, user's manual.

Motorola XV2100 Business 2-Way Radio Review

Motorola XV2100 Business 2-Way RadioBefore I start, I want to advise you that these radio's require an FCC License. The VHF Model (this product), XV series has 5 MURS* channels, which do not require a license. Anyway, I got this radio for my Auxiliary "Police Team", a city watch group. These radios will come in handy.

They are rechargeable, have several frequencies and are great for work/business. These radios are extremley tough. Don't complain about the price, because it's well worth it. This radio can take the most extreme conditions your workplace has to offer. It can be left in the rain all day, and continue to work like it's brand new. If you drop it, nothing much but a small scratch. So, when purchasing these - don't worry about them getting damaged after a year - these radios will work great for years to come.

MURS Channels are only availble on the following Motorola XTN Series models:
- XV1100
- XV2100
- XV2600

The XU (UHF) Models do not have MURS Channels. Not to mention, these radios come with a very good holster, so the radio will never fall out of the holster.

The battery life is approximatley 13 hours (depends on communication length, volume, traffic and speaker output).

And for quick communications, get a Speaker/Microphone that can clip onto your shirt, this will not only make communications easier and faster, but you won't even have to pick up the radio! There are several Speaker/Microphone's out there, but I recommend you purchase a Motorola Lapel Speaker/Microphone, made for Motorola Brand Radios, and it's what the professional public safety officials use.So if your in business or workplace and looking for a good communication system, and don't feel like paying for an FCC License, purchase this product, and select one of the five MURS channels that are available.*=MURS, Multi Use Radio Service, a radio service that allows for communications for unlicensed use for personal and business use.

Product Description:
If you're in business and need to keep in close contact with your workers and colleagues, the Motorola XV2100 business two-way radio may be exactly what you're looking for. With hands-free functionality, a lightweight but rugged design, an extended battery life, and enhanced range capability, the Motorola XV2100 is designed with the professional who cares about efficiency and safety in mind.

Take a closer look at the Motorola XV2100's functions.
A handy belt clip, plus a rugged design make the XV2100 perfect for the work day. Many work sites, including construction areas, grocery stores, hospitals, and warehouses, require workers to cover vast amounts of area in the course of the day. These sites also suffer from high ambient noises generated from poor acoustics, machinery, vehicle traffic, and other loud sources. Keeping in constant touch with your staff requires communication tools that are specifically designed for these environments. When communications break down, your organization becomes less efficient, and issues such as productivity, safety, and profitability suddenly become serious concerns.
Operating on FCC frequencies reserved exclusively for business use, the Motorola XV2100 is a powerful two-way radio that can help you keep your business's operations on schedule, maximize productivity, enhance security, and increase overall customer satisfaction. (The Motorola XV2100 operates on VHF frequencies, making it ideal solution for working outdoors and in and around wood structures.)
Thanks to a newly designed chip and optimized acoustic cabinet that provides clearer audio at higher volumes, the Motorola XV2100 offers a significant improvement of sound quality over earlier Motorola two-way radio models. The radio has also been designed not only to be weatherproof, shockproof, and drop-proof, but also to meet MilSpec810 and IP54 standards. In other words, this is a radio that's built to take the harshest work conditions your job can dish out.
A radio is only as good as its power source. With the included XTN NIMH rechargeable battery, you will get up to 13 hours of continuous work between recharges, and if you find yourself running a third shift on the same radio, you can throw in two AA batteries to keep the talk flowing for another 22 hours.
The Motorola XV2100 also lets you spread out. With vastly improved selectivity, sensitivity, and voice compression in the receiver, you can talk up to 250,000 square feet, or up to 20 floors in a multi-level building. (Talk range may vary depending on terrain and conditions.)
The XTN-series rechargeable battery offers a whopping 13 hours of life. Of course, talk range is meaningless if you have continual channel chatter. With the XV2100 you have 27 business-exclusive VHF frequencies along with 121 private line codes, including 83 digital private line codes (DPL). So not only are you more likely to find a clear channel with no interference, you also get a high degree of compatibility with your existing fleets of radios.
Speaking of compatibility, this radio can operate seamlessly with all Motorola Spirit professional two-way radios, including all radios in the Spirit M-Series, the Spirit GT, the Spirit HP, the Spirit Pacer, and the Spirit S-Series. So you can add XTN Series radios as you go, or anytime you need to replace radios or purchase additional radios for your fleet.
And speaking of fleets, the XV2100 is designed for split-second cloning using the multi-unit charger. This allows you to quickly add radios to an existing fleet, or pick up and move the whole fleet to a new location and set it up in a hurry with all the appropriate channel and code settings. So if you're in a business that necessitates close communication with your staff, the Motorola XV2100 is designed to do the job safely, efficiently, and economically.
What's in the Box
One XV2100 two-way radio, drop-in radio and battery charger, rechargeable NiMH battery, radio carry holster, AC adapter, and user's guide.

Audiovox Electronics GMRS500SLK 5 Mile Ultra Slim GMRS 2-Way Radio with FM Radio Review

Audiovox Electronics GMRS500SLK 5 Mile Ultra Slim GMRS 2-Way Radio with FM RadioThe Audiovox 2-Way radio appears to have excellent range and audio quality. It is very slim and compact, which makes it light and easy to wear on a belt, or to put in a purse for a woman. The fact that it has the ability to use subchannels means that there is little chance of transmissions from others coming through on the radio so that it is silent except for when someone who has your same channel set up wishes to call you.The compact design of radio is excellent.

Motorola 25 mile T9580R SAME Two-Way FRS/GMRS Radio Review

Motorola 25 mile T9580R SAME Two-Way FRS/GMRS RadioI received Four T9580R as free replacements for my faulty T9500. The 9500's cut out when talking, and it's a documented problem. If you used a 2 way radio, or read any other reviews you will quickly come to find that none of them give you the range they claim. These claim 25 miles, but in two vastly different locations, my average is about 1/10 of that.In rural middle Tennessee (rolling hills & trees) these are capable of 1 - 1.5 miles which I actually expected based on other 2-ways I've owned. At the beach in FL (flat and sparse, 80 degrees when testing) I was able to get 3 - 3.5 miles of clear communication straight down the coast line.I expected more at the beach, and thought I may obtain 10-12 miles, but no such luck.

Things like elevator shafts, inside automobiles and being near any large source of metal/steel will greatly reduce your range.

The S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding)feature isn't real practical, so I have it turned off. With this feature on, I noticed a delay in being able to start talking. You have to press the talk button for about 3 seconds before you can begin speaking or the other party will not hear the first word or two. With it off, you can begin speaking right as you press the communication button. The other reason is that all the weather messages that get transmitted are in 3 letter code.Unless you carry the manual with you, you will be hard pressed to understand the message since many don't correlate well with the warning. S.V.A. is Severe Thunderstorm Watch, S.V.R. is Severe Thunderstorn Warning, etc.

The mic hole takes a little practice getting proficient. Once you understand how far to hold from your face (not far), and speak to towards the mic hole, it's fairly easy to understand each other.

This is a better radio than the T9500 or 9550, but I honestly like the Motorola Fr-60's I have better. They are 10+ years old, easy to operate, and inspite being dropped in sand, on rocks and worn in the rain, I think they sound better. The FR-60 range is less but not by much, maybe a half mile.Motorola has packed in a lot of features into their current radios, but they seem to work better when you turn off all the frills.

Still, these are handy radios with privacy sub codes, and work great in some settings, like amusement parks, on the beach, around a small farm, etc. but your real world range is very limited in my experience. I've dropped mine a few times from a moving bicycle and they have survived asphalt impact, so they seem to absorb shock well, which is a plus since the belt clip sucks....and the rechargeable battery life seems short to me which will only get worse as they age. I'm kind of on the fence. ***

Cobra PR 260-2 WX VP 12-Mile GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radio (Twin Pack) Review

Cobra PR 260-2 WX VP 12-Mile GMRS/FRS 2-Way RadioThese were rated for 12miles - and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs.Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.

Midland LXT310 X-tra Talk GMRS / FRS 2-Way Radio Value Pack with 10 Mile Range Review

Midland LXT310 X-tra Talk GMRS / FRS 2-Way Radio Value Pack with 10 Mile RangeI have 2 of these and my girlfriend also has 2. Average range for this type of radio. Its about a mile from her house to mine and it comes in not too bad, a little scratchy, depending on where we are standing in our apartments. Did a test, she drove to school, and I talked near my window on the 3rd floor of my apartment. We could barely hear each other at 2.5 miles when she got out of her car and was in the parking lot. We kept in check as she was driving there and was getting ok communication, up to about 2 miles. Not too bad, probably better if we were both outside. If you can find some , go for the GXT400's. I've read lots of reviews on and off Amazon, that these are best bubble pack radios as far as range from Midland. Higher output. Real-world output measurement from the FCC website for the LXT310 (FCCID:MMALXT410) is (0.832 watts). Real-world output measurement for the GXT400 (FCCID:MMAGXT400) is (2.004 watts). Probably why you getter better range from the GXT400. These are great if you can get them for a good price for kicking around the house and keeping track of your kids running around the neighborhood, but if you can, and have the extra $$$, spring forthe GXT400's.

The DingoTel 2Way system offers an ingenious way to connect your existing two-way radios to the Internet, allowing you to communicate with contacts when you're miles away from your computer. The DingoTel 2Way's simple setup allows you to communicate easily with your contacts in minutes.
Get the most out of your two-way radios by using the Internet as a bridge. The DingoTel 2Way system works by connecting your two-way radio to your computer and then transmitting your voice over the DingoTel network via voice-over-IP (VoIP). There are two parts to the system: the device and the software. The 2Way device plugs into a standard USB jack. Then, using the provided cable, connect one of your radios to the device. It's that simple. There are no power cables or transformers, so you won't need an AC power outlet. Meanwhile, the DingoTel 2Way software works like most instant messaging programs that feature a list of contacts. Making a call is as simple as speaking the words "Call Robert." To add your friends and contacts to your calling list is also simple, and all you need to know is your intended contact's email address and DingoTel 2Way does the rest. Once you have created a list of contacts, you are free to pick up your second radio and move away from the computer. With long distance two-way radios you are able to get miles away from your computer and still communicate for free. Many Motorola radios extend up to 5 miles, and a newer versions from Motorola and other brands have a range up to 10 miles.
The software uses voice recognition to understand your commands and either make or hang up calls with your contacts. Another advantage of the DingoTel system is that call receivers do not need a two-way radio, the 2Way device, or the 2Way software. Instead, they can download DingoTel PC, a free client for connection to the DingoTel Network. There are no fees for the free client, there are no fees for talking with you on your two-way radio. Talking on 2Way is truly free. DingoTel is also ideal for business use. Manage sites in distant locations and reduce your phone bills. And with zero operating costs it offers the ultimate freedom to talk.
What's in the Box
DingoTel 2Way USB sound card device, 2.5mm headset/mic jack fly lead (compatible with Motorola Talkabout and many other radios), quick start guide, software CD-ROM.

Cobra 150 GTL DX 4-Band 10-Meter Amateur Radio Review

Cobra 150 GTL DX 4-Band 10-Meter Amateur RadioIf you're looking at buying this radio, more than likely you know what it really is. It's an "Export" radio disguised as a 10M radio. You can find this radio for around $100 if you shop around. You won't find a cheaper "Export" radio. It performs pretty well too, if you don't hack it to death. Mine does 30 watts right out of the box. Too many people play around with VR12 and then wonder why their audio keeps cutting in and out. Hooked up with a decent power mic, I've gotten excellent audio reports without clipping or tweaking anything. I give the radio 4 stars at its $100 price tag.

Product Description:
Join the vibrant world of amateur radio or upgrade your existing equipment with the Cobra 150 GTL DX four-band, 10-meter model. Though it looks and works similarly to a CB radio, the 150 GTL DX is technically a ham radio, and operates from 28 to 29.7 MHz (as compared to traditional 26.965 to 27.405 MHz CB frequencies). The advantage of the 10-meter design is simple: more power. The device offers a robust 15 watts of transmit power, which produces a longer range for transmission and reception. As a result, operators can make hundreds of friends around town or around the world, or they can use the radio for emergency purposes, serving as a conduit between citizens and police/emergency services during hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
The affordable, feature-packed 150 GTL DX uses a Mosfet 20-watt dual final transistor design to ensure maximum output power. Among its more valuable functions are 320 channels (with 80 channels per switch setting); 32.8-foot AM/FM operation; a dual power mode that offers a choice between full power (with a larger range) and low power (which conserves output); SWR antenna calibration that helps users receive the best signal (especially in tandem with the antenna warning indicator); and a 10 kHz control switch. Fortunately for operators, the radio also includes a number of extras to improve transmission and reception, including a talk-back control for monitoring the sound feedback effects, tone and echo controls that manage the echo effect and intervals, and a mic gain that dynamically boosts the microphone for increased voice clarity.
Added benefits include a large analog meter, a 4-pin front mic connector, and a frequency counter jack that connects to a separately sold six-digit frequency counter. The radio, which measures 7.87 by 2.36 by 9.25 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
Note:
An amateur radio license is required to operate a 10-meter ham radio.

Midland LXT300 Midland LXT300 22-Channel GMRS (Pair) Review

Midland LXT300 Midland LXT300 22-Channel GMRSI have owned this product for about an year now. It works fine within a half mile to a mile radius (product claims a 10 mile radius). The handsets feel sturdy and very usable. After about an year of use, the battery indicator is always at "low" every after an overnight recharge and the unit drops conversations with a crackle. It might just need a new rechargeable battery pack but in the future, I am unlikely to buy a "Midland". I do have to add that it was very useful during the time it worked well.

Cobra LI 6500-2 WX VP 20-Mile GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radio (Twin Pack) Review

Cobra LI 6500-2 WX VP 20-Mile GMRS/FRS 2-Way RadioWhen looking at FRS/GMRS Radios radios ignore the marketing ploys that tell you the range of the radios (12 miles, 18 miles, 22 miles). All of the radios sold to the general public (except high end models- over $100 per individual radio) have the same power output rating- 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS.All other things being equal- every radio will have the excact same range. Why do you think that the more expensive the radio the farther a range the manufacturer says it has?Because they want you to THINK a more expensive radio has a farther range so you will buy the more expensive one.But they all have the same power output- meaning they will essentially have the same range. This is all a marketing PLOY to get you to buy a more expensive radio.A more expensive radio may have more features, but if the power output is the same the range will essentially be the same. You can look for the power output on the manufacturer's website, but I have researced this already- almost all models sold to the general public have 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS.With the power rating being the same the things that will affect range are antenna size, height of the transmitter, and terrain- usually things you will have little control over.So buy a radio that has the features and size you want and ignore the marketing ploys about the range.

Motorola T7100R GMRS/FRS Rechargeable Two-Way Radios, Silver (2 Pack) Review

Motorola T7100R GMRS/FRS Rechargeable Two-Way Radios, SilverI bought this 2-way radio to use around the rural community I live in, especially for communicating in emergency wildfire situations. It is an area with rolling hills, many pine, oak trees and brush.

The Good: Easy to use, clear instruction manual, more than enough channels, clear sound.

The Bad: It didn't work over a mile as soon as line of sight was lost.If there is a hill between the two radios, I could only hear a click that the other radio was trying to transmit, but no communication.

The Ugly: The radio is very cheaply put together. The rechargeable battery pack is almost impossible to insert into the battery compartment. While trying to insert it, I broke one of the battery poles in the battery compartment.I was able to repair it with some solder and glue, but I wouldn't try to remove and re-insert it.If you use AA batteries only, it shouldn't be a problem. They are easy to insert.I also tried to remove the belt clip from the radio in order to have clear access to the battery compartment. There is a little tab on the belt clip that keeps the clip on the radio, you need to pull that tab to release it off the radio.Well, the first time I pulled the tab, it broke off. After that, the clip wouldn't stay on the radio. All this experience even before I started using the radio made me conclude that this is not a well-constructed radio, and does not deserve the Motorola brand.I am returning it and I will look at the commercial grade ones instead (such as the CP200).
