Product Description:
If you're in business and need to keep in close contact with your workers and colleagues, the Motorola XU1100 Business 2-Way Radio may be exactly what you're looking for. With hands-free functionality, a lightweight but rugged design, extended battery life, and enhanced range capability, the Motorola XU1100 is designed with the professional who cares about efficiency and safety in mind.

Take a closer look at the Motorola XU1100's functions.
A handy belt clip, plus a rugged design make the XU1100 perfect for the work day. Many work sites, including construction areas, grocery stores, hospitals, and warehouses, require workers to cover vast amounts of area in the course of the day. These sites also suffer from high ambient noises generated from poor acoustics, machinery, vehicle traffic, and other loud sources. Keeping in constant touch with your staff requires communication tools that are specifically designed for these environments. When communications break down, your organization becomes less efficient, and issues such as productivity, safety, and profitability suddenly become serious concerns.
Operating on FCC frequencies reserved exclusively for business use, the Motorola XU1100 is a powerful, two-way radio that can help you keep your business operations on schedule, maximize productivity, enhance security, and increase overall customer satisfaction. (The Motorola XU1100 operates on UHF frequencies, making it ideal for communication inside steel and concrete structures.)
Thanks to a newly designed chip and optimized acoustic cabinet that provides clearer audio at higher volumes, the Motorola XU1100 offers a significant improvement of sound quality over earlier Motorola two-way radio models. The radio has also been designed not only to be weatherproof, shockproof, and drop-proof, but also to meet MilSpec810 and IP54 standards. In other words, this is a radio that's built to take the harshest work conditions your job can dish out.
A radio is only as good as its power source. With the included XTN NIMH rechargeable battery, you will get up to 15 hours of continuous work between recharges, and if you find yourself running a third shift on the same radio, you can throw in one AA battery to keep the talk flowing for another 24 hours.
The Motorola XU1100 also lets you spread out. With vastly improved selectivity, sensitivity, and voice compression in the receiver, you can talk up to 200,000 square feet, or up to 10 floors in a multi-level building. (Talk range may vary depending on terrain and conditions, of course.)
The XTN-series rechargeable battery offers a whopping 15 hours of life. And, of course, talk range is meaningless if you have continual channel chatter. With the XU1100 you have 56 business-exclusive UHF frequencies along with 121 private line codes, including 83 digital private line codes (DPL). So not only are you more likely to find a clear channel with no interference, you also get a high degree of compatibility with your existing fleets of radios.
Speaking of compatibility, this radio can operate seamlessly with all Motorola Spirit professional two-way radios, including all radios in the Spirit M-Series, the Spirit GT, the Spirit HP, the Spirit Pacer, and the Spirit S-Series. So you can add XTN Series radios as you go, or anytime you need to replace radios or purchase additional radios for your fleet.
The XU1100 is designed for split-second cloning using the multi-unit charger. This allows you to quickly add radios to an existing fleet, or pick up and move the whole fleet to a new location and set it up in a hurry with all the appropriate channel and code settings. So if you're in a business that necessitates close communication with your staff, the Motorola XU1100 is designed to do the job safely, efficiently, and economically.
What's in the Box
One XU1100 two-way radio, drop-in radio and battery charger, rechargeable NiMH battery, radio carry holster, AC adapter, and user's guide.

Uniden 300-Channel Clock Radio Scanner Review

Uniden 300-Channel Clock Radio ScannerThis was on my wish list and my wife indulged me for my birthday! Thanks!

When I started working as a young teenager, the second thing I bought with my money was a Bearcat 6 channel handheld scanner. That was more than 30 years ago and times sure have changed.

Let us talk about the non scanner features first. The atomic clock works solid and had no trouble getting signal. The alarm clock also works as expected. The snooze button could stand out a little more since there are a lot of buttons of similar size and location.(I said similar and not exact!)

The FM and TV reception work fine and I can pick up stations 40 to 50 miles away without static. The AM reception is adequate and works about as good as AM radio can.

The radio also has a very important feature of weather alerts from NOAA.You can program it to only alert you on weather events in your area (county). This is an important safety feature I cannot suggest more.

To be honest, I didn't need an atomic alarm clock or an FM radio as I already had those needs met.I also have a nice collection of scanners but I had a specific need (want) and this scanner fit the bill - almost.

I will digress for a second and mention that many metropolitan areas no longer use conventional radios for public safety agencies.Conventional means each agency has a dedicated radio frequency and many times departments inside of each agency have their own dedicated frequency. It doesn't take long to realize that a lot of frequencies are needed.

To combat this, many public safety agencies (and sometimes large businesses) will use a trunked radio system. To monitor trunked radio systems, you need a scanner capable of receiving (following) the system. Some trunked systems are now digital which require an even more specialized scanner.

The Uniden BCT15 or Uniden BCD996T will work for trunked or digital trunked systems.I strongly suggest you research what systems and frequencies are used in your area before you buy any scanner.

Getting back to the scanner review...

This scanner monitors conventional frequencies only.I bought this scanner to specifically monitor one frequency - the local school system. This system allows me to monitor early morning traffic from the school which allows me to be alerted of any problems or concerns including weather delays or closings.

But I also use it to monitor more items such as those little FRS radios everyone seems to have and the traffic from the local Air Force base.I won't bore you will everything but programming is very easy to do and the manual is very clear on all operations of the radio.(You can preview the manual at Uniden's website.)

The reception is very good and when I listen to some air bands for commercial and military, it has several hundred miles of range with the supplied antenna.

The search feature is functional and the preprogrammed search banks make it easy for new users to find frequencies. You can create your own custom search banks too.

The operation to scan or hold on one frequency is simple to learn and use.

I gave the scanner only 4 stars for 2 reasons. One is the really poor BNC connector on the antenna. It is a major complaint that extends to most Uniden base station scanners. You need to be careful attaching it or you can damage the antenna or even the radio.

The second reason is more of a personal nit pick of my own.I picked up the scanner to monitor the conventional frequency of the local public school. My bedroom is located on the second floor so I have some height inside the house on the radio.

An ambulance service a couple of counties over also uses the same frequency as the school. The local school has a PL tone which I can program into other scanners in my collection but not this one.So I wished the scanner accepted PL tones.Again, this is just a small nit pick which won't be a problem for most others.

I do recommend this radio or any Uniden radio in general.I own 3 current models and have had many in the past.Enjoy and happy scanning!

Midland LXT420 22 Channel GMRS Value Pack with NOAA All-Hazard Weather Alert Review

Midland LXT420 22 Channel GMRS Value Pack with NOAA All-Hazard Weather AlertAfter you read the first review read my comment on that review it will give you some insight to these radios. If you use Hi Power (which you must enable as they start up in low power) you will acquire good range if you don't have hills in the way. With smaller hills about 1/3 -1/4 of the distance can be expected, so 4 to 5 miles, with mountains forget it. The radio waves cannot bend around the hill. At the frequency these operate at they are great for line of sight use. For what I paid they were a great value so I bought 2 sets. The Weather channel also works very good. In reality I think 4 1/2 stars would be about right.

Midland GXT600VP4 5-Watt 22-Channel GMRS with NOAA All-Hazard Weather Alert Review

Midland GXT600VP4 5-Watt 22-Channel GMRS with NOAA All-Hazard Weather AlertThese radios work very well in the thick woods of northern Wisconsin. They work for up to about 2 miles. Compared to the Motorola 1 watt radios which only worked over a distance of about 1/2 mile they are much better. For all of the people who don't like these, first of all manufacturer claims of 5, 10, and even more miles of reception are not realistic unless perhaps you are out on the open waters of the great lakes with excellent atmospheric conditions. That is just the nature of all radios of this type. A few watts (5 watts in this case)will not get you very far. Just consider that your average nite lite bulb runs on 4 watts and this will help you to put it into perspective. These radios need to convert your voice transmissions into sound so for them to do it over a distance of 2 miles in thick woods and do it loud enough so that you can hold a conversation is a pretty good accomplishment in my book. In other words, if your radio does not work up to your expectations then a. you need to realize that it is the laws of physics, energy, and matter that govern their performance and b. of course companies tout the virtues of their product under excellent conditions i.e. that's marketing so get used to it. You get what you pay for. Considering what I paid for these I would recommend them to everyone. They are an excellent purchase. I'm buying 2 more. By the way the only reason I gave them 4 stars and not 5 stars is the fact that Midland advertises them as having 18 miles of reception. I've heard of marketing (see point b. above) but even to me this is a bit much.

Audiovox GMRS672CH 6-Mile 2-Way Radio Twin Pack with Dual Desktop ChargerThis product is shown with a duocharger as well as mentioning the charger in the description on sellers site. It did not come with one the seller told me it was a
accident that that was done.
I kept them only because it would cost more to ship them back then they are worth, as the seller will not send one.
I doubt if I will risk purchasing from your format again. I only gave it 1 star because the form demands a rating to be submited. Jay Clark

Motorola XU2600 Business 2-Way Radio Review

Motorola XU2600 Business 2-Way RadioUPDATE: July 2007 Just be sure that the product is fresh, current, and is in fact the current (red label) version - some of the older (white label) versions are appearing for sale that have first version defects. They are no longer supported. The red label XTN radios on the other hand are great and have a near zero falure rate.

This is a very interesting radio. It replaces and way exceeds the now obsolete M-series Motorola Mu24cvs 4 channel radios. The M-series radios were so good that the XTN would have go a bit to beat them. Beat them it does.

A few points: These new radios are six (6) channels selecting from a library of 56 internal frequencies whereas the M radios were only four (4) channels selecting from a library of 8 internal frequencies. The XTN radios also can use the digital (DPL) privacy or private line codes that were not available to the M series. The XTN radios are compatible with the M series and they do work well together. Battery life is double for the XTN units: nearly 16 hours use before recharging. The old M series radios barely did 6 hours. The output power is a solid and full 2 real watts something sadly one never finds on the M series radios after only a little use. Those old guys only test out at about 1.4 watts average on the bench. The VOX really works on the newer XTN's and was pretty poor on the M series. Also VOX will work with the internal radio mic if desired which is a plus not found on the M series. The charging systems are way advanced over the M series systems and the batteries are amazing and last seemingly forever.

The bottom line is the XU2600 is one of the best UHF small business radios Motorola makes. They are nearly impossible to kill by dropping unlike the M series. The XTN radios produce a killer receive volume level making them useful in the nosiest environments; they also speak in a low whisper so very clearly. The transmit audio is truly great and the operating range is tops with the new compression and transmission algorithms. Side by side no M series radio of the same wattage talks nearly as far.

About the only things we find on the down side is that the antenna cannot be removed, so an external antenna impossible, and the volume control knob can be knocked off with the right accidental bump.

These radios are not toys and operate on assigned business frequencies/ A valid FCC license must be obtained prior to use. The license can be applied for online at the FCC website but it is way better to simply pay a frequency coordination company to do this complex work for you.

TriSquare TSX100 eXRS 900MHz FHSS 2-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/Black Review

TriSquare TSX100 eXRS 900MHz FHSS 2-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/BlackIn comparison tests, the Tri-Square radios have generally held up favorably. The audio is a bit fuzzy compared to the Motorola radios and the overall range seems to be a bit longer than the Motorolas, except when the Tri-Square radios dip below the horizon. The 900 MHz frequency range is, as one would expect, somewhat more linear and subject to line-of-sight limitations than the 460 MHz FRS radios. The analog FRS radios will maintain a stronger signal connection under less optimal line-of-sight conditions than will the Tri-Square units.A better antenna and/or a bit more power might ensure the accuracy of Tri-Square's claim that its eXRS radios will exceed the range of FRS radios under comparable conditions.

Click Here to see more reviews about: TriSquare TSX100 eXRS 900MHz FHSS 2-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/Black

Product Description:
TriSquare has revolutionized 2-way radio communication with eXtreme Radio ServiceTM (eXRSTM). eXtreme Radio Service (eXRS) two-way radios use proprietary Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) in the ISM band (900 MHz frequencies). This FHSS system combines the power of digital technology with narrow band FM modulation technique. Merging the two technologies facilitates a radio communications system that maintains a narrow band base signal to ensure for maximum usable range within a given dB power budget, comparable to traditional fixed frequency narrow band FM radios, but with the added benefit of wide band digital security and privacy provided by the frequency hopping spread spectrum algorithm. Maintaining the information signal as narrow band FM modulation centered on discrete frequencies allows for a large pool of non-overlapping hopping frequencies to draw upon within a given section of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The pseudo-random drawing of the hopping frequencies spreads the total signal power equally over the entire bandwidth of the RF spectrum used, which ensures minimal interference between many simultaneous, independent users. Interference Free is a major advantage that eXRS has over existing FRS and GMRS radios. Based on a contracted study from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of a major university, more than 100,000 eXRS users within talk range can enjoy uninterrupted communications. Whereas, FRS/GMRS quickly becomes unusable with just a few tens of users within range of each other. Bottom-line is that the eXRS two-way radios provide private communications in areas where FRS/GMRS conversations can be congested or impossible. Depending on which model you choose, your eXRS radio will have 1,000, 10,000, or all 10 Billion eXRS channels available for your use. Each radio offers Voice-operated transmission (VOX) for hands-free operation with headset compatibility.

Cobra LI 7020-2 WX EVP Micro-Talk GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radio Review

Cobra LI 7020-2 WX EVP Micro-Talk GMRS/FRS 2-Way RadioThe product Quality seems to be B+.The total package still fails. Why!!!Because the base unit two way radios "voice activation feature" does not work with the headset package that it comes with and they knew it before they packaged it and sent it out.

I bought my daughter and son-inlaw to be a set of two way radios with voice activation so that they could enjoy their bike rides together safely and with constant communication with the voice activated feature advertised with these two way radios. The day of the trip, they could not figure out how to get it to work.

A week later, when they had time, my daughter called customer support only to find out that they knew that it did not work. They did not offer any suggestions or willingness to send a head set that does work.

I really think they should have sent her a head set that does work.Seventy dollars is a lot of money to pay for a device that does not work on one of the most basic and attractive features of the radios.

Motorola XV1100 Business 2-Way Radio Review

Motorola XV1100 Business 2-Way RadioI've carried around many military radios weighing 7-10 times this thing's weight and not been able to get out over a couple miles.(The MIL AN/PRC-77, affectionately nicknamed the "Prick-77" was a beast for a radio and was usually not reliable with terrible battery life).

These Motorola's are simply spectacular and the battery life on these units is really exceptional.I was a bit skeptical because I don't like paying $400 for a set of radios...but...when you really need to rely on your commo, this will do it...and then some.(Oh yeah, this radio can operate seamlessly with all Motorola Spirit professional two-way radios, including all radios in the Spirit M-Series, the Spirit GT, the Spirit HP, the Spirit Pacer, and the Spirit S-Series).

With the included XTN NIMH rechargeable battery, you will get up to 15 hours of continuous work between recharges, and if you find yourself running a third shift on the same radio, you can throw in two AA batteries to keep the talk flowing for another 24 hours.
The Motorola XV1100 also lets you spread out. With vastly improved selectivity, sensitivity, and voice compression in the receiver, you can talk up to 200,000 square feet, or up to 10 floors in a multi-level building. (Talk range may vary depending on terrain and conditions.)
The XTN-series rechargeable battery offers a whopping 15 hours of life. Of course, talk range is meaningless if you have continual channel chatter. With the XV1100, you have 27 business-exclusive VHF frequencies along with 121 private line codes, including 83 digital private line codes (DPL).
And speaking of fleets, the XV1100 is designed for split-second cloning using the multi-unit charger. This allows you to quickly add radios to an existing fleet, or pick up and move the whole fleet to a new location and set it up in a hurry with all the appropriate channel and code settings. So if you're in a business that necessitates close communication with your staff, the Motorola XV1100 is designed to do the job safely, efficiently, and economically.

TriSquare TSX300 eXRS Digital Two-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/Black Review

TriSquare TSX300 eXRS Digital Two-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/BlackThe advantage of this frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) radio is unless someone knows what "channel" (of 10 billion) you select, eavesdropping by a third party is highly improbable. It also means you won't be disturbed by others who are using the same frequency, as with FRS/GMRS radios, even with so-called privacy codes.

The TSX300 works fairly well when there are two units on the same channel -- their frequency hopping seems to stay in synchronization. Audio quality is generally good. In my experince, distance is on-par with other 1-watt UHF 2-way radios.

Having more than 2 radios on the same channel consistently has one or more getting out of sync with the others. This means one or more radios will not be able to hear others' transmissions and vice versa. This is a real showstopper for my requirements.

The good news is, private communication between any two radios (using a radio's private channel) seems reliable, regardless of how many radios are active. So, you can treat these like telephones -- one unit can communicate with any other -- just avoid using a common broadcast channel.

The other issue with this model is its battery life. Because these are FHSS devices, they must actively transmit in order to maintain synchronization. This uses significantly more power than a device that only receives during standby, and battery life suffers as a result.

The ability to send short text messages is neat, but I personally haven't found a practical application for it, especially given there is no guarantee of delivery. A message may or may not be delivered, and there's no feedback to the sender one way or the other.

Overall, for the price, if you're only using a pair of radios, the TSX300 is a good value. If you try to add a third radio to the party, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Product Description:
Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M88 handheld VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including an easy-to-read backlit LCD display, an intuitive six-button keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a great fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching. As a bonus, the radio also offers 22 free channels (from 146 to 174 MHz) reserved for land mobile (commercial) use, making this an ideal unit for marine professionals who also work on the shore (requires FCC license).
The radio's layout is straightforward and easy to use, with a half dozen clearly labeled buttons on the front panel and a volume/power knob along the top. The radio's rugged body, meanwhile, meets military specifications for durability, so you can rough it up at sea or on land without fearing a breakdown. Other design details include 5 watts of output power for reliable communication over long distances, a surprisingly compact chassis that fits easily in the palm of your hand, and a two-step power saver that preserves battery life.
The IC-M88 also offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch"modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged.
Additional features include a lithium-ion battery pack that delivers up to 15 hours of talk time per charge, instant access to channels 16 and 9, a key lock function, a four-level battery life indicator, a programmable beep sound, and a self-check function that monitors the internal temperature, connected battery voltage, and water intrusion. Bundled with such accessories as a drop-in charger, swivel belt clip, and hand strap, the IC-M88 radio measures 2.44 by 3.81 by 1.53 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.

Product Description:
Keep on top of emergencies, stay in touch with other boaters, and even listen to your favorite AM and FM radio stations with the Standard Horizon STD-HX471SS handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX471SS is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, letting you communicate easily with other ocean-going vessels. At the same time, the radio receives a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And should you want to call your friends or family on shore or sing along to your favorite station, the HX471SS can handle that, too. The radio's Family Radio Service (FRS) band accommodates your ship-to-shore communications, while the AM, FM, and aeronautical bands give you a ton of listening options. Simply put, the HX471SS lets you monitor a range of frequencies previously unavailable in any portable marine VHF radio.
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX471SS is rugged and fully waterproof, with a high-impact, non-corrosive, silver die-cast chassis that can withstand a high degree of physical abuse while also standing up to submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Want a submersible radio to take hiking, skiing, hunting, or caravanning? Look no further. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels. And should you want to scan between a VHF marine channel and a FRS channel, simply activate the Dual Watch function. Other operational details include an NOAA weather alert function that notifies you of impending severe weather, a Preset key that lets you store up to 10 channels for each band, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
Another nice feature is the NMEA charging cradle that lets you connect the radio to a GPS. Once connected, the radio stores your GPS location in its memory, and then notifies the Coast Guard or other emergency service should an accident occur. In the event of a distress, simply grab the HX471SS, lift the Distress cover, and depress the Distress key for three seconds. The radio will then transmit a distress call with your position while simultaneously activating the strobe light.
Packaged with a 1,300 mAh lithium-ion battery, HX471SS delivers 10 to 12 hours of operation on a single charge. Plus, the battery is guaranteed never to develop a "memory" that inhibits its ability to work for a full day. To charge, simply attach either the AC or 12-volt DC cable to the charging cradle and you're set (charging time is roughly three hours).
The radio, which also comes with a quick-draw belt clip, measures 2.36 by 3.78 by 1.12 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box
Handheld marine VHF radio, rechargeable battery, AC charger, 12-volt DC charger with cigarette lighter plug, charging cradle, user's manual.

Product Description:
Stay safe while navigating the coastal waters with the Standard Horizon Quest-X fixed-mount VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the Quest-X is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio picks up 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And because it's nearly impossible to monitor the NOAA channels at all times, the radio includes an audible weather alert tone and visual alarm. The variety of channels and functions make this an essential tool for communicating with other boaters, marinas, the Coast Guard, and commercial towing companies, all of whom can offer live-saving assistance during a crisis.
The Quest-X comes with a high-quality microphone that meets the same strict waterproof standards as the radio. More significantly, the microphone incorporates Standard Horizon's ClearVoice noise reduction technology, which eliminates unwanted background noises such as engines and wind. The resulting "loud and clear" transmissions are crisp and easy to understand the first go round, adding to the safety of all involved. At the same time, users can create a second VHF station through the same antenna by connecting a separately sold Remote Access Microphone (RAM+) or a VH-310 telephone-style handset. The advanced submersible microphone, which works at such locations as the fly bridge, cockpit, or tower, controls all the radio functions from a distance while also showing the channel names and repeating the GPS information. The RAM+ microphone even comes with 25 feet of routing cable, so you don't need to run additional wires for an external speaker.
The Quest-X also meets the internationally recognized requirements for Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows you to send a distress signal at the touch of a button or exchange position information with other boats or stations. DSC activates a continuous, unattended "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your latitude and longitude, and gives the time. Furthering the Quest-X's safety reputation is its GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS position receiver, the Quest-X can send your GPS position to other boats in an emergency, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen, with Speed Over Ground and Course Over Ground info to help keep you on track.
Finally, the Quest-X is a breeze to use thanks to the large, backlit LCD display, which offers tall, wide digits and obvious, easy-to-identify information flags. Other details include a Dual Watch mode for monitoring one user-selected channel at the same time as emergency channel 16; a Priority Scan mode for scanning any combination of channels along with a priority channel; customizable channel naming; and an oversized rotary channel selector.
Bundled in a submersible black case, the radio keeps on talking even after a full drenching. The radio, which measures 7 by 3.1 by 5.9 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a three-year warranty.
