SONY SPP-S2730 CID / Multi-Handset / Walkie Talkie Combo Review

SONY SPP-S2730 CID / Multi-Handset / Walkie Talkie ComboI got fooled by the Sony brand name, thinking this coordless phone would be about the same quality of my Sony TV.Well, it wasn't.It lasted about a month before it just stopped. I replaced it with another brand that cost half the price, and it works just fine . . .threw the Sony in the garbage.

I don't think that Sony even makes these anymore - for good reason!

Midland GXT550VP4 Outfitter Series 5 Watt 22 Channel Mossy Oak Camo GMRS Value Pack with Up to 14 Mile Range Review

Midland GXT550VP4 Outfitter Series 5 Watt 22 Channel Mossy Oak Camo GMRS Value Pack with Up to 14 Mile RangeI just purchased these radios because I wanted a long-range two way communications system. I go paintballing, fishing, hiking alot. I tested them out by having someone at my house with one, and then I drove in my car with the other one. I wasn't impressed at all, I only got about 1 1/2 miles out of them, even on high power. I don't live in the mountains, city, or thick woods either.

Although they didn't get that long of a range out of them, I still recommend them if you are going hiking or biking. I also like the "tactical headsets" that go with radios.

Bottom line, don't get them expecting to get a 5-14 mile range. That only happens in open areas. But, you really have no choice if you want two-way-radios because the 14 mile range is the maximum they make right now.

Motorola T9500XLR 25-Mile 2-Way Radio Pair Review

Motorola T9500XLR 25-Mile 2-Way Radio PairThe T9500 radios are great radios and are the best I have used in the GMRS/FRS consumer family of radios for under $100.These radios have a great quick release belt clip and seem to be well built. The weather channels are a plus and sound clear through the T9500's speaker.I like the way the transmit button works. It has two switches built in.Press the button on the bottom and your radio transmits on low power (.5 watt).Press it on the top and your radio will transmit high power (2 watts on GMRS frequencies only).

Ok power, yes the T9500 transmits at 2 watts max power. It was hard for me to find this little known fact as this site and Motorola's own site conveniently neglect this info.I had to search the web and finally found it advertised on REI's web site.I am assuming the Motorola marketing folks thought this was a smart move as most consumers falsely believe more watts equates to longer transmission range.

I used to think watts were like horse power, the more the better. If you took two identical handheld radios one radio putting out 2 watts and the other radio putting out 5 watts you would get about a ¼ mile increase in transmission range under real world conditions with the 5 watt unit, all things being equal. But things are not equal from brand to brand and thank goodness for Motorola that this fact holds true.I have discovered over the years after using many different handhelds that what matters more is the quality of the electronic components, good circuit design, antenna elevation and electromagnetic conditions.Mostly what people will find with those other company's 5 watt units is they will use their battery up faster. If you think by getting an FCC license ($85) and a nice fancy new 2 - 5 watt high power GMRS radio you are going to see some massive improvement over your old .5 watt FRS radios think again. You will be lucky to get double the range of a FRS radio all other conditions being equal.I had the 5 watt Midland radios and took them back to get these and could not be happier with my decision.I don't see any difference in transmission range between the two sets and the Motorola's sound better and have better features.

Motorola T8500 Talkabout 2-Way Radios with Rechargeable Pack, NOAA Weather Alerts and Vibrate Review

Motorola T8500 Talkabout 2-Way Radios with Rechargeable Pack, NOAA Weather Alerts and VibrateWe got these because one of our older radios broke. The reception was poor, we tested many different channels and it was very difficult to hear someone only 50 feet away. Our older radio (the one still working) had clear reception and clairty. We were very disappointed as we purcased these for a family road trip for which we caravaned. We would have been better off just using cell phones or writing notes and holding them out the window. We are not technically challenged so I don't think it was an "end-user-error". I would like to return these but my husband wants to keep figuring out why they don't work well. Vibrate feature didn't work consistently after setting it up a few times. Why 2 stars, the design is nice.

Cobra CXR825 Gmrs/ Frs 2 Way Radio Review

Cobra CXR825 Gmrs/ Frs 2 Way RadioAmong the brands of GMRS/FRS radios, Cobra is the only one I've found to use Li-ion batteries.Compared to other rechargeable battery technologies, Li-ion will last longer and weigh less.Cobra has three models in their flagship category: 925, 825, 725.I chose the 825 for a few reasons.

Compared to the 925, this model lacks the voice recorder and has lower battery capacity.Without the voice recorder, if you miss something, I think it's a matter of asking people to repeat their message.Although the 925 battery capacity is higher, the voice recorder increases the power draw, so it may offset and result in similar battery life. The main differences between the 725 is the capability to receive NOAA weather broadcasts; I believe the batteries and the outside form factor are the same.

They advertise different communication ranges (35, 30, 27) in miles.I'm skeptical and wish there were more truth in advertising. However, for casual users, you're probably within 5 miles. These types of GMRS/FRS radios do not work well inside cars unless you have an external antenna. If used properly, they work reasonably well.I've been able to communicate within 10 miles. For the purists, the 925 and 825 have three transmit power levels (5, 2, 0.5 watts) while the 725 has only two (5, 0.5 watts).

So far, I can think of only one drawback - I wish Cobra makes a car charger.Their website says you may purchase parts and build your own, just call them for wiring info.

Midland AVPH1 Open Face Helment Headset for Midland GMRS Review

Midland AVPH1 Open Face Helment Headset for Midland GMRSI purchased the Midland AVPH1 Open Face Helment Headset for Midland GMRS with a GXT710VP3 radio. The headset delivers great clear sound quality - easy to understand while dirt biking at a high rate of speed -- although that also has to do with the radio as the speakers can only produce what the radio puts out. It was also quite easy to install in my helmet: a typical motocross helmet with open face for goggles and closed, pointed mouth protection. The adhesive backed velcro disk that mounts the mic base to the helmet holds securely -- something I initially doubted. I routed the flexible mic boom in a spiral fashion under the helmet bottom and located the mic right in front of my mouth position. To hold it in place and make it easy to get the helmet on and off without disturbing the headset I drilled two very small holes in the helmet mouth protection and ran a small wire tie in one hole, around the mic boom just behind the mice pickup and back out through the second hole, into the tie clasp and cut it off flush so that there is only the tiny end visible and nothing to catch on. I didn't pull it tight, just snuggish to prevent movement without binding or stressing the boom. As for wires,I didn't want the wire junction where mic, left speaker, right speaker come together hanging down putting tension on the mic mount or wires so I just taped everything to the back of the helmet leaving the one wire with the plug end that goes to the radio harness hanging down off the back. I just used silver duct tape. Some people might object to this type of thing. But I prefer function over some sort of stylish look -- although my helmet is silver, like the duct tape (and Red Green would be proud!). The speakers mounted easily in the ear recesses of my helmet also with a peal and stick adhesive backing velcro pad and the wires routed easily between helmet padding pieces. I cleaned the mounting surface for the speakers and mic mounting points with alcohol first to get a good stick. The speakers have a soft cover and do not hurt my ears (or even touch them much). Although mounting the same set-up in my wife's closed face helmet of different manufacture which had more ear/upper cheek padding required taking the helmet padding piece out, pealing back the cloth and cutting out some foam so that the speaker did not press into her ear and cheek bone. That was not hard either -- about 30 minutes total for her helmet.
The jury is still out on the push to talk switch. I'm glad it was included. However, for dirt biking I did not think it prudent to mount it to the handlebars as intended since falling off would rip the whole thing apart at the plug or elsewhere. So I wrap the push to talk switch around my left thumb, pointing down and a little in on my left thumb so that I can grip the handle grip well, but extend my middle finger and thumb toward each other while still holing on to push the button. Works well. I hold the wiring in place by routing it from the radio (mounted on my belt on the left side toward the back) inside my shirt and body armor, up the back and down the arm and out the inside elbow hole, and along the inside of my forearm. Takes about 2 full minutes to route. But it is nice to be able to communicate with my riding buddies (or wife on easier rides) whereas we had to stop before. If using the VOX function, which also works very well as long as you put in one word you don't intend anyone to hear first (or say "Ahhh for one half second) to get it going. In that case you can just stuff the wires in your pocket and go after running the helmet wire up your back and plugging it in and taping it (for serious riding). I recommend taping the connections anyway to keep crap out of the din connector.
Overall, it's a great setup and great sound quality.

Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB Handheld Marine VHF Radio (Black) Review

Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB Handheld Marine VHF RadioThese radios were over $350.00...Now that newer models have arrived you can purchase for approx $100 less. Radio has several bands (Air, FMS, AM/FM etc.) in addition to marine radio.
Reception is very clear and the compact unit is solid quality. We have used for approx 3 years with no problems. Sound is very good at all volume levels except at full volume you get some distortion. However, you do not need full volume to clearly hear.
You won't go wrong with this feature packed radio.

Product Description:
Keep on top of emergencies, stay in touch with other boaters, and even listen to your favorite AM and FM radio stations with the Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX471SB is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, letting you communicate easily with other ocean-going vessels. At the same time, the radio receives a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And should you want to call your friends or family on shore or sing along to your favorite station, the HX471SB can handle that, too. The radio's Family Radio Service (FRS) band accommodates your ship-to-shore communications, while the AM, FM, and aeronautical bands give you a ton of listening options. Simply put, the HX471SB lets you monitor a range of frequencies previously unavailable in any portable marine VHF radio.
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX471SB is rugged and fully waterproof, with a high-impact, non-corrosive, black die-cast chassis that can withstand a high degree of physical abuse while also standing up to submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Want a submersible radio to take hiking, skiing, hunting, or caravanning? Look no further. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels. And should you want to scan between a VHF marine channel and a FRS channel, simply activate the Dual Watch function. Other operational details include an NOAA weather alert function that notifies you of impending severe weather, a Preset key that lets you store up to 10 channels for each band, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
Another nice feature is the NMEA charging cradle that lets you connect the radio to a GPS. Once connected, the radio stores your GPS location in its memory, and then notifies the Coast Guard or other emergency service should an accident occur. In the event of a distress, simply grab the HX471SB, lift the Distress cover, and depress the Distress key for three seconds. The radio will then transmit a distress call with your position while simultaneously activating the strobe light.
Packaged with a 1,300 mAh lithium-ion battery, HX471SB delivers 10 to 12 hours of operation on a single charge. Plus, the battery is guaranteed never to develop a "memory" that inhibits its ability to work for a full day. To charge, simply attach either the AC or 12-volt DC cable to the charging cradle and you're set (charging time is roughly three hours).
The radio, which also comes with a quick-draw belt clip, measures 2.36 by 3.78 by 1.12 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box
Handheld marine VHF radio, rechargeable battery, AC charger, 12-volt DC charger with cigarette lighter plug, charging cradle, user's manual.

Cobra CXR920 Gmrs/Frs 2-Way Rechargeable Radio (Twin Pack) Review

Cobra CXR920 Gmrs/Frs 2-Way Rechargeable RadioI live in the bahamas; nassau, to be more accurate. It is only seven by 21 miles and I can get only about three miles tops, even with the so called range extender; which only disables the automatic squelch so the radio will recieve a weaker signal. For kids playing in the yard it is a dream but for any other use froget it. It's garbage atotal waste of money and time. if there was a minus rating I would give them a minus five star or even a ten but I give it one because the unit Seems well built.

TriSquare TSX100-2VP eXRS Digital 2-Way Radio (Pair), Charcoal Metallic/Black Review

TriSquare TSX100-2VP eXRS Digital 2-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/BlackThe TSX-100 radio is simply one of the best short range 2-way radios available. It uses the 900Mhz ISM band (902-928Mhz range). And is full 1-watt.Uses spread spectrum technology (similar to CDMA Cell Phones:Sprint, Verizon Wireless, US Cellular, Cricket) which makes it JAM-PROOF and highly unlikely that anyone can monitor while using the best scanner radios.900Mhz band means easy penetration thru thick walls and buildings with dense materials concreate and metal. It is simply the best for Indoor-to-Outdoor or vice-versa comms. And has identical coverage with VHF when used for Outdoor-to-outdoor use.

The TSX-100 does not have all of the exra bells and whistles of the TSX-300 radio:

- 1,000 virtual channels (using FHSS)
- is compatible with all TSX-100 radios
- is compatible with all TSX-300 radios (below channel 1,000 ;
channels 0-999 allows interopability to any Trisquare radio)

(See my review of the TSX-300 for a list of some of the bonus
features on the TSX-300)

With the PRO features, there is one notable CON:

- Do NOT place the TSX-300s or TSX-100s too close to each other.
- They sometimes experience De-Sync issue when a unit nearby
transmits too close. So keep them 4 or more feet apart from
each other. This only occurs when too close to other Trisquare
radios. This does not seem to occur when other nearby radios
or cell phones are placed too close. So no need to worry about
MURS, FRS, GMRS or HAM radios are under 3 feet away.

At least 95-100% of all of the bad reviews or complaints about this radio is over this single flaw in the radio.Rule of thumb, keep the
TSX-300s and TSX-100s a minimum of 4 feet apart from each other at all times, and you will never have any problems at all.Simple right?

Even the TSX-100 is so much better than any MURS, FRS or GMRS radio.
900Mhz just has superior radio properties over all VHF and the rest
of the UHF band.900Mhz penetrates and bounces around inside buildings
better then any other UHF service. And certainly superior over VHF as VHF does NOT bounce well inside any buildings.Instead VHF gets knocked out of phase, and its wavelength mostly gets cancelled-out or worse yet ABSORBED into the building's materials:concrete, wood & metal. VHF is an OUTSIDE only band.UHF is a good inside and outside band.900Mhz has the best properties.FRS/GMRS operates at 462 & 467Mhz.Take 462 x 2 and that equals:924Mhz, which means that 900Mhz has a wavelength that is HALF that of FRS/GMRS.Which means none of the wavelength phase interference of VHF or even of the low-UHF at 462Mhz.Again, it boils down to superior in-building penetration.Thru Concrete, Wood & bouncing off of Metal.

Enjoy your TSX-100, enjoy the superior 900Mhz properties for indoor-to-indoor or indoor-to-outdoor (also vice-versa), or even outdoor-to-outdoor comms. Its FHSS full 1-watt of power will show its superior ability over all MURS, FRS & GMRS radios.

- MURS - VHF 2-watts ERP (Poor Indoor properties - not recommended for
any indoors use at all ; Any scanner can receive, no privacy)
- FRS- UHF 1/2-watt(Good Indoor properties - 1/2 watt max power)
Any scanner can recieve, no privacy ; some HTs have limited voice
scramble function)
- GMRS - UHF 50-watt (Good Indoor properties - 5-watt HTs are hard
to find ; Any scanner can recieve, no privacy ; some HTs have a limited voice scramble function)
- EXRS - 900Mhz 1-watt (Superior Indoor properties - full 1-watt HTs)
FHSS assures no scanner can monitor, wonderful privacy feature)

TriSquare has revolutionized 2-way radio communication with eXtreme Radio ServiceTM (eXRSTM). eXtreme Radio Service (eXRS) two-way radios use proprietary Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) in the ISM band (900 MHz frequencies). This FHSS system combines the power of digital technology with narrow band FM modulation technique. Merging the two technologies facilitates a radio communications system that maintains a narrow band base signal to ensure for maximum usable range within a given dB power budget, comparable to traditional fixed frequency narrow band FM radios, but with the added benefit of wide band digital security and privacy provided by the frequency hopping spread spectrum algorithm. Maintaining the information signal as narrow band FM modulation centered on discrete frequencies allows for a large pool of non-overlapping hopping frequencies to draw upon within a given section of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The pseudo-random drawing of the hopping frequencies spreads the total signal power equally over the entire bandwidth of the RF spectrum used, which ensures minimal interference between many simultaneous, independent users. Interference Free is a major advantage that eXRS has over existing FRS and GMRS radios. Based on a contracted study from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of a major university, more than 100,000 eXRS users within talk range can enjoy uninterrupted communications. Whereas, FRS/GMRS quickly becomes unusable with just a few tens of users within range of each other. Bottom-line is that the eXRS two-way radios provide private communications in areas where FRS/GMRS conversations can be congested or impossible. Depending on which model you choose, your eXRS radio will have 1,000, 10,000, or all 10 Billion eXRS channels available for your use. Each radio offers Voice-operated transmission (VOX) for hands-free operation with headset compatibility.
