(2-pack) New two-way Fashionable Wrist-operated Wristwatch Walkie Talkie Wrist Watch--Auto Channel Scan--LCD display--Auto Squelch Review

(2-pack) New two-way Fashionable Wrist-operated Wristwatch Walkie Talkie Wrist Watch--Auto Channel Scan--LCD display--Auto SquelchJust Junk pure and simple. I could never get them to work right out of the box. The chargers fried the batteries on the first charge. If you speak and read English the instructions are totally worthless. They are made VERY cheaply.
I bought these for an elderly couple that didn't want to carry the hand held models. I'm very disappointed. We eventually went with a 4 pack of the Motorola mini Walkie Talkies.

Cobra PR 165-2 VP microTALKGMRS 2 Way Radio Two Pack with Up to 6 Mile Range Review

Cobra PR 165-2 VP microTALKGMRS 2 Way Radio Two Pack with Up to 6 Mile RangeI have had these walkie talkies (Cobra PR 165-2 VP microTALK) for a couple months now. They work fairly well.Be aware that since this is a dual band radio you need to be careful what channel you transmit on if you don't have a license from the FCC.The manual tells which channels are FRS and which are GMRS.

These radios are small and easy to carry. They work well for kids to use in a limited area.

The range is closer to a half mile than the 6 miles they state. That's normal for FRS radios from what I hear.Near the end of the range the sound cuts in and out, and is hard to understand.

One problem: on one of the radios the push to talk button is sensitive, it just barely works and you have to hold it just right or it cuts in and out.

One irritation: you can't turn off the roger beep that gets sent after you talk, and it's really loud!If that doesn't bother you, these radios will work fine for you.If that's a problem, find a set that lets you turn the beep off.

Icom IC-M72 Handheld Marine VHF Radio Review

Icom IC-M72 Handheld Marine VHF RadioWe now have 2 of these marine radios. They work very well and are easy to use and set up.We had to buy a separate "float" bag, however, because we were afraid the radio might fall out of our sailboat and sink.It does not float by itself--something you need to consider when using it.

Product Description:
Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M72 handheld VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including an easy-to-read LCD display with an extra-wide viewing angle, a backlit six-button keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a great fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching.
The IC-M72 radio offers a bit more of everything than most marine handhelds, with more transmit power (6 watts) for carrying a conversation an extra-long way, more audio output (600 mW) for drowning out noisy engines and howling winds, more hours of use per charge (15 to 16 hours, as compared to the typical 8 to 10 hours), and more water resistance (the radio is certified to withstand an extra half meter of submersion). The one thing it offers less of, however, is antenna, with a 30-percent shorter antenna that still performs every bit as efficiently as other Icom models. Add in a compact, hourglass-body shape with cozy side grips and a high-intensity, backlit display and you have a comfortable, fun-to-use radio that excels at both daytime and nighttime operation.
The IC-M72 offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch"modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged.
Other details include instant access to channels 16 and 9, an auto power save function, a four-step battery life indicator, and an AquaQuake draining function that clears water away from the speaker grill by emitting a vibrating sound. Bundled with such accessories as a belt clip, a hand strap, a lithium-ion battery pack, and a drop-in charger, the IC-M72 measures 2.06 by 4.91 by 1.19 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.

Cobra CXR800 Gmrs/Frs 2-Way Rechargeable Radio with Hands Free Operation (Twin Pack) Review

Cobra CXR800 Gmrs/Frs 2-Way Rechargeable Radio with Hands Free OperationI purchased these compact Cobra 2-way radios because I had owned an earlier model (now obsolete) and had loved the earlier model for it's sound quality and ease of use - easy to set channels, to lock and to undnerstand how each feature worked. I could also use it with a headset so that I could be completely hands-free.I was still happy with the ease of use of this Cobra model, and the sound quality was good (on Motorola's I find it harder to understand the transmissions), and I liked the placement of the controls. However, my disappointment was HUGE when I tried to use it with a headset - not any headset, mind you, but the Cobra earbud that is supposed to be used with it.There is a feature on the Cobras (ALL of them as their tech support has told me) called "Power Save".It is not enough for them to tell you there is a "Power Save" feature; so proud of it are they that when it is "active" it flashes a "Power Save" logo on & off when you are not sending a transmission or receiving a transmission.Over a headset, this translates to an audible clicking sound every time the logo flashes on and off.It is enough to drive you crazy and render any headset completely worthless. So I recommend Cobra radios highly if you do not need to use a headset (you cannot hear the "clicks" without the headset) but give them a huge raspberry if you want to use a headset.Hopefully they will fix this glitch in future models, but in the meantime look elsewhere for your handsfree option.

Uniden GMR2889-2CK 2-Way 28 Mile 2 Pack GMRS/FRS Radio with Dual Charger Review

Uniden GMR2889-2CK 2-Way 28 Mile 2 Pack GMRS/FRS Radio with Dual ChargerI purchased these for a car caravan summer trip in 2008 where we would not have the use of cell phones due to some of the remote locations out in the western U.S.The claim of a range of 28 miles is absolutely ridiculous.Typically 1 watt = 1 mile under good conditions.I figured that even if I got ¼ of that range it would still be good, it was not.We have very poor communications car to car even when we were 200 feet apart.Broken and dropped transmissions not to mention poor battery life (even when I charged them every night in the hotel).I'm not sure how Uniden is getting away with the performance claims on this product.I was sorely disappointed with these and I'm a Uniden fan and have been for years.

Cobra CTX125 Micro Talk Gmrs/ Frs 2 Way Radio Review

Cobra CTX125 Micro Talk Gmrs/ Frs 2 Way RadioI bought the 2-way radio for our cruise we took. I bought it after reading about similar cobra products and liked the fact that batteries were rechargeable. After the initial charge the 2-way radio worked fine. We could communicate on the ship with each other to find where the other was, the voice was clear and crisp. One draw back was not having sub-channels on this product, as a result we could hear other conversations from other users. Even though the feature lists 16 mile range, I would say the maximum range was about 1 to 1.5 miles on an island without any major obstacles. The initial charge lasted a while but when the initial charge was gone, one of the radios would not recharge again and after a while the other failed to recharge. I tried charging for over 2 days but still no luck. I don't know where the failure was, whether it was the charger or the batteries themselves. I really like these radios but were useless without recharge so I ended up in returning to Amazon.

Cobra PR 255-2 VP GMRS/FRS 2-WAY Radio Value Pack with 10-MILE Range Review

Cobra PR 255-2 VP GMRS/FRS 2-WAY Radio Value Pack with 10-MILE RangeI bought these radios for use during a camping trip. I liked the fact that they can receive all 10 NOAA Weather channels, and for me the price was right. In retrospect, I should have spent just a little more money, because there are a couple of serious issues with these radios.

First and foremost, the keytones are EXTREMELY loud, whereas the audio is rather quiet. Adding to the problem is the fact that increasing the audio level also increases the loudness of the keytones. Every key produces the same harsh tone, including the backlight key! What's worse is there is no built-in way to disable the keytones (but I did find somewhat of a fix - read below). So in otherwords, you have to put up with a lot of unneccessary ruckus to get your radio turned on, set it to the right channel, adjust the audio level, etc. When out in the almost dead quiet and pitch black of night deep in the woods, I found the keytones an utter nuissance and a dead giveaway of your presence if you are trying to keep things on the down-low. The "Roger beep" is also disproportionately loud, but thankfully that can be set to either ON or OFF.

The other problem I found with these radios is that their battery life is what I would consider quite poor when using privacy codes. Batteries will definitely last longer for you if you leave the code set to 0, which means NO privacy.

Aside from those two issues, I found that these radios will get the job done for not much money. Their range was surprisingly good, and the weather band reception was decent. You don't get many channels or privacy codes, however, but you do get a pretty decent pair of weather radios. If privacy and keeping quiet are important to you, look for nicer radios.

[To fix the keytone problem, you have to carry a small 1/8" adapter with you. For example, an 1/8" male to RCA female adapter, or the cut-off plug from a broken pair of headphones will do. By plugging something into the headset jack, the built-in speaker ceases to function, allowing you to adjust the radio silently. Then when you are ready to talk, remove the adapter. This is a pain to deal with, but if you are stuck with these radios and want to keep quiet, this is at least one way to deal with the noise.]

Wrist Watch Style 2-Way FRS Radio Walkie Talkie, 2 PackThese walkie-talkies are poor quality and unreliable. Standard Horizon STD-HX370S Handheld Marine VHF Radio Review

Standard Horizon STD-HX370S Handheld Marine VHF RadioWe have four of these handhelds where I work, on ocean-going tug/barge units. They're about 2 years old now and have taken a good hard licking through all four seasons, in every kind of precipitation imaginable, at least several hours of operation a day, being dropped at least once per use, and have held up great. The only problem I can tell is that the belt clip broke off on one after being dropped for the umpteenth time, and thats not very significant at all.We use the optional remote mics exclusively and they tend to send groggy transmissions when wet, but easily solved by a sandwich baggy and a rubber band.Have had to replace a few of those, again for their having been dropped one too many times, but thats another review. The button layout is pretty straight forward, any deckhand could decipher how to use it without problems.Button locking feature comes in handy, find that you will always inadvertently change something without it when slipping it into you back pocket. We don't really use any of the more indepth features, so I can't really comment on those, but from experience it is a workhorse in all kinds of weather even in drenching rain, pretty much akin to being submerged.

Product Description:
Keep on top of emergencies while staying in touch with other boaters with the Standard Horizon STD-HX370S handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX370S is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio offers a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And if that weren't enough, it's also compatible with up to 40 commercial Land Mobile Radio (LMR) channels with CTCSS or DCS signaling, though a Standard Horizon dealer will need to program the channels (and users are responsible for obtaining the appropriate FCC license).
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX370S is rugged and fully waterproof, with a compact design that can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function, either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels 16 and 9 and the NOAA weather alert, which warns you of inclement conditions. Other operational details include a Preset key that easily recalls your eight most-used channels, an oversized LCD with channel names, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
When you're not using the 5-watt radio, simply drop it in the included charging cradle, which will keep the rechargeable NiMH battery operating at full capacity (the radio lasts for roughly 18 hours per charge). Also included is a waterproof alkaline battery tray, a 12-volt charger, and an AC charger. And because dead batteries can be a serious safety hazard on the water, the HX370S sports a battery life indicator on the LCD that warns you when the battery needs charging. Also compatible with optional speaker microphones, headsets, and voice scramblers, the HX370S radio measures 2.3 by 3.7 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box

You can charge the MR355R using the Motorola standard charging port (with the included charging adapter), the Drop-in cradle charger (also included), or purchase a mini-USB cable for use with the Mini-USB charging port, especially useful when traveling.
121 Privacy Codes
Interference Eliminator Codes help minimize interference by blocking transmissions from unknown sources. The MR355R features 121 codes for superior interference protection.
Ten Call Tones (Five Standard, Five Animal Sounds)
The MR355R can transmit different call tones to other radios in your group so you can alert them that you want to talk. You can also add stealth and fun to your outdoor adventure by masking your radio's normal ring tone under the guise of a quacking duck, a cackling goose, a gobbling turkey, a bugling elk or a howling coyote. You will find this a helpful way to blend into the untamed habitat of the wild.
Hands-Free Communication
Use the iVOX feature to transmit hands-free without the need for any headset accessories. Once iVOX is turned on, the radio detects your voice and transmits when you speak into the internal microphone.
QT (Quiet Talk) Noise Filtering
The QT noise-filtering feature helps to ensure uninterrupted communication with other Motorola radios, filtering out unwanted transmissions from other radios. This is useful in places where there is heavy radio traffic, such as amusement parks or ski resorts.
Talk Confirmation (Roger Beep) Alert
You can set your radio to transmit a unique tone when you finish transmitting. It is like saying "Roger" or "Over" to let others know you are finished talking.
Weather Receiver
Tune in to broadcasts by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio and Environment Canada Weatheradio. Both NOAA and Environment Canada have transmitters located throughout the United States and Canada, respectively. These transmitters broadcast watches, forecasts, and other information 24 hours a day.
Weather Alerts
A special alarm tone sounds an alert and turns on the weather receiver to give you immediate weather and emergency information.
Flashlight
Handy built-in LED flashlight comes in handy in the dark or during power outages.
Push-to-Talk (PTT) Power Boost
When activated, this feature helps extend the transmission range by increasing the transmitter power output while helping to save battery life when no power boost is necessary.
Extra Large Buttons
Skiers and winter sports adventurists will appreciate the new design that features extra large buttons making it easier than ever to operate with gloves.
VibraCall
For quiet adventures or when ringing is intrusive, the VibraCall feature can be enabled to silently alert users to incoming transmissions.
